The Heart in Exile

Delivered by: Rev. T.J.Campo

Scripture text: Jeremiah 9:23-26, 17:5-13, 1 John 3:18-23

23Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things," declares the LORD. 25"Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet uncircumcised--26Egypt and Judah, and Edom and the sons of Ammon, and Moab and all those inhabiting the desert who clip the hair on their temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised of heart.”

5Thus says the LORD,  "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6"For he will be like a bush in the desert and will not see when prosperity comes, but will live in stony wastes in the wilderness, a land of salt without inhabitant.  7"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD and whose trust is the LORD.  8"For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit. 11 9"The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it? 10"I, the LORD, search the heart,  I test the mind, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds. 11"As a partridge that hatches eggs which it has not laid, so is he who makes a fortune, but unjustly; in the midst of his days it will forsake him, and in the end he will be a fool." 12A glorious throne on high from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary. 13O LORD, the hope of Israel, all who forsake You will be put to shame.  Those who turn away on earth will be written down, because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the LORD.

18Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. 19We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him  20in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. 21Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. 23This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.
